The Pitch

The great cosmologist Carl Sagan was one of my favourite pitchmen. If you read Sagan correctly, what he means is that we are not separate from the universe - we ARE the universe.  Just as the wave is the ocean and the leaf is the tree, inextricable interconnectedness is at the heart of our reality. We are nothing but the self-experiencing of the universe. 

But like most of the great lessons from all of the great minds, we forget. Each of us seems to begin the journey all over again from birth without bothering to stand on the shoulders of the giants who came before us. There is no reason to start over just because you were born. Everything we need to know to understand our place in nature has already been discovered. So why aren’t we paying attention? 

Get the big picture - move to a higher level - connect to something greater. This expanded awareness or level of higher consciousness is where all the great minds merge, where every wisdom is born and every solution is found. 

Our society doesn’t talk much about higher states but they are built in to each of us. Just as the sub-conscious creates our dreams at night, higher consciousness is part of the package. But it is not accessed by going to sleep, it is accessed by waking up. Just as the experience changes when we become aware that we are dreaming (lucid dreaming), we can trigger the very same type of shift in awareness when we are awake. It’s called peak experience.  A domain of awareness so potent that all the constituents of higher consciousness can be found in its embrace. A peak experience can not be given by others, acquired by gaining its knowledge or understood intellectually.  It must be felt subjectively.  Peak experience has to happen to you. All you have to do is put yourself in its path and allow the full potential of the cosmos within you to take its course. Then you will be taking Einstein out for lunch, waltzing with Mozart, and winking at Sagan that he was on to something.

Coming to function from a higher state of awareness is as indispensable to living as wind is to flying a kite. Peak experience can be a catalyst for this type of higher consciousness - providing profound moments of understanding, rapture, connection, love in which a person feels more whole, alive and more connected to truth. These realizations reflect one’s full potential and represent the height of personal growth.

Your constitutional position in the realm of nature is elemental to life.  We need sun, air, earth and water to exist. We metabolize these fundamental forces as the experience of being alive.  When we come to appreciate that we aren’t the authors of any of these component elements of our existence, we can see that it is not so much that we are breathing as we are being breathed.  It is not so much that we are living as we are being lived. The realization of interconnectedness through peak experience delivers a higher state of human awareness.

The metaphysics of identity lies at the core of these insights. With experimentation in higher states there is a shift in identity. A change of occupancy. We come to see that our previous sense of ourselves is fatally incomplete and indefensible as reality, and that what lies prior to our ideas must therefore comprise the truth of our identity. Like it or not, you are the universe in the form of a human nervous system.
